13 – Elephants II
Looking at a couple from the rear end does bring home how enormous they are
They not only drink at the hole, but also cool themselves by spraying themelves with water/mud, as these are doing
Kids love to have fun!
You remember that I said that the terrain of the national park is basically sand? Geologically this means desert. Then, you ask (because you are intelligent): if it is a desert, how are there watering holes around the park, where you see the animals drinking? Simple. Or, rather, complicated. Some international organizations are committed to the success of the park, and to the protection of the animals. So they have paid for a host of solar panels, which power pumps to bring water up from the water table to the different pans. This isn't easy, as the highest level of the water table is about 130' (40 m) below the ground. The pumps actually go down at least another 150' (45 m) further than that. Providing that they keep working, this keeps the water available for the animals. So the animals keep returning, which in turn keeps them visible for guests like me (and you) to enjoy
